Screw Compressors: Design and Specifications

Screw Compressors: Design and Specifications
Models (F)
Standard version on base frame

The Comprag screw compressors are available in different designs that are precisely tailored to the requirements of your operating environment. Whether as a space-saving individual component or as a ready-to-connect complete station - Comprag offers the right solution for your compressed air needs.

The Comprag F screw compressors are the standard version, mounted on a robust base frame.

Your advantages in detail:

  • Flexibility and space saving: This is the space-saving version of the Comprag screw compressor for cases where the compressor is installed in a separate compressor station.
  • Individual system selection: All other components of the compressed air system - such as the compressed air tank, the refrigerated dryer, and the filters - can be selected as needed and installed externally . This offers maximum flexibility in designing your compressed air network

Comprag screw compressors form the basis of our reliable compressed air generation. They produce industrially compressed air of the highest quality , optionally with an integrated refrigerant dryer, achieving the demanding class 4-4-4 according to ISO 8573-1:2010.

The robust design of Comprag compressors focuses on the longevity and efficiency of its core components

The robust design of Comprag compressors focuses on the longevity and efficiency of its core components:

Designation Position Your Comprag Advantage
Controller (A)
A
The professional control system intelligently manages the automatic mode of the entire screw compressor . It provides the operator with all important information about the process (e.g., operating pressure, temperature of the air-oil mixture, process duration), thus maximizing operational reliability.
Reliable Electric Motor (B)
B
Comprag screw compressors are equipped with high-quality motors with high efficiency coefficients . These motors feature an energy reserve and thermal motor protection, ensuring durability and high operational reliability.
Screw block (C)
C
The heart of every Comprag screw compressor . The screw block features a modern and energy-efficient rotor design . As the screw pair rotates, the pressurized oil forms an optimal oil film between the rotors. This ensures contactless rotation and, consequently, the longevity of the entire Comprag compressor.
Oil separator tank (D)
D
The large-volume oil separator tank is essential for the efficient separation of air and oil. It supports the purity of the generated compressed air and protects downstream components.

This is how your Comprag screw compressor generates compressed air

The detailed compression process of your Comprag screw compressor

The process of transforming ambient air into high-performance compressed air is a precise, energy-efficient process ensured by the interaction of high-quality components. Our process diagram illustrates this impressively:

  1. Air inlet and filtration (3, 4): The process begins with the air inlet valve (3), through which ambient air flows into the compressor. This air is first cleaned by the air filter (4) to remove particles and ensure the longevity of the downstream components.
  2. Compression in the screw block (1): The filtered air reaches the heart of the compressor: the screw block (1). Here, the air is compressed by the counter-rotating rotors. Simultaneously, oil (red) is injected into the screw block. This oil has several functions: It lubricates, seals, and dissipates the heat generated during compression. An air-oil mixture (orange) is created.
  3. Drive of the screw block (2, 9): The screw block (1) is driven by the electric motor (2). In the models shown here, this is done via a belt drive (9). Our D and DV series use a direct drive, which eliminates the belt and its maintenance.
  4. Air and oil separation (5, 6, 7): The hot air-oil mixture (orange) is then directed to the air-oil separator tank (5). Here, a coarse separation takes place. The oil collects at the bottom, while the still oil-containing air mixture continues to rise. It then flows through the oil separator (7), where the finest oil particles are separated. The now clean oil (red) is purified by the oil filter (6) before being returned to the circuit.
  5. Air cooling (8): The compressed, but still hot air (blue) flows through the heat exchanger (8), also known as the aftercooler. Here, the air is cooled before it leaves the system. The resulting heat of condensation can be effectively used for heat recovery, as described later.
  6. Thermostatic valve and minimum pressure valve (12, 11): The thermostatic valve (12) ensures the optimal operating temperature of the oil. The minimum pressure valve (11) ensures that a minimum pressure is always maintained in the separator, which is essential for an efficient separation process.
  7. Cooling of the compressor (10): To regulate the operating temperature of the entire system, powerful fans (10) are installed to ensure constant cooling.

The advantages of your Comprag screw compressor in use

A Comprag screw compressor offers significant advantages that directly impact your operating costs and production reliability. Through our consistent focus on quality, innovation, and efficiency, we guarantee minimal energy consumption and maximum investment security.

  • High energy efficiency through frequency control: The frequency-controlled Comprag FV and DV series (Variable Speed Drive, VSD) in particular precisely adjust the motor speed to the actual air demand. This eliminates costly idle times and saves up to 25% electrical energy compared to conventional compressors with fixed load cycles, especially in cases of fluctuating demand.
  • Continuous operation and durability: Comprag screw compressors are designed for uninterrupted 24/7 use in industrial environments. The screw block is designed for the highest loads, ensuring an extremely long service life and optimal reliability for applications with high and constant compressed air demands in manufacturing plants or industrial facilities.
  • Low noise and vibration: The optimized rotor design and robust construction - especially the low-loss and low-wear direct drive of the D-series - result in less vibration and a significantly lower sound pressure level . This improves the working environment and often allows for decentralized installation of the screw compressor close to production.
  • Space-saving and ready-to-connect complete solutions: Comprag FRD complete systems on a compressed air tank, including an integrated refrigerated dryer and pre-filter, deliver clean, dry compressed air from a compact unit. These solutions are ready for immediate use, reduce installation effort, and save valuable space in your building.
  • Minimal maintenance costs and high serviceability: Thanks to the well-designed, service-oriented construction, all maintenance components such as filters and oil separators are easily accessible. This drastically reduces maintenance times, minimizes downtime, and keeps the life cycle costs of your Comprag screw compressor low.
  • Intelligent and safe process control: The modern controls in our Comprag screw compressors (e.g., t-Log control) monitor all relevant operating parameters in real time (pressure, temperature, maintenance intervals). They automatically optimize operation, increase process reliability, and can be integrated into your higher-level building management systems if required.
  • Effective heat recovery options: A large portion of the energy supplied to the Comprag screw compressor (up to 94%) is released as heat. By using our optional heat recovery systems, you can utilize this waste heat for heating buildings or for hot water production. This further reduces your energy costs and improves your environmental footprint.
Investment security and maximum efficiency

For medium-sized industrial companies and demanding manufacturing processes that require a high and constant compressed air availability , the Comprag screw compressors in the 30 kW to 90 kW class are the optimal solution.

In the highly competitive compressed air technology market, Comprag screw compressors stand out due to key features that sustainably reduce your operating costs:

1. Unrivaled energy efficiency

  • Highly efficient motors: All our screw compressors are equipped with high-quality motors that ensure a high efficiency coefficient and thus contribute to reducing life cycle costs from the first hour of operation.

2. Maximum system integration and digitalization

  • Smart control (t-Log): The professional t-Log control system monitors the Comprag screw compressor fully automatically. It provides all important information (pressure, temperature, operating time) and optimizes the automatic mode, thereby increasing operational reliability.

3. Sustainability and heat recovery

  • Utilize your Comprag screw compressor as an energy source. Up to 94% of the electrical energy supplied to the compressor can be recovered as heat and used for your heating systems, domestic hot water, or production processes. A Comprag screw compressor is therefore an active component in reducing your CO2 emissions and further lowering operating costs.

4. Robust quality and ease of maintenance

  • Excellent maintainability: The logical, service-friendly design of all Comprag screw compressors ensures easy access to all filters, oil separators, and valves. This reduces downtime and keeps maintenance costs to a minimum.
